The formation of this beautiful harbour is similar in character to that of a Norwegian fjord, with wooded mountains rising high on either side and an open valley in front. The town, the old French capital of the island, is situated in a valley, being protected from the sea by a natural break-water of wooded inlets. Above the market is the cathedral.
