 | Item 1934 Housewife Between the Wars 1939 The Nostalgia Postcard 1939 During the years between the wars, smaller families offered women more freedom to expand their horizons, particularly through their ability to work outside the home. However, many women saw a career as a secondary part of their lives. Magazines and advertisers reinforced these feelings by emphasizing the importance of clothes and cosmetics, a perfect home with well-cared for children and a contented husband. "Housewife" was launched in 1939 with this philosophy: "Happy and Lucky is the man whose wife is houseproud... who likes to do things well, to make him proud of her and her children.".
