It is situated on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, in the foothills of Kozjak and Mosor mountains. With a population of 193,867 (2005) it is the second largest city in Croatia. Absolute majority of its citizens are Croats with 95.15% (2001 census).
