Taiwan Paper Making Art 1994 Set of 5 Stamp Folio & Env

SG2172-2176, Set of 5 stamps, Tian Gong Kai Wu Traditional Paper making in stamp presentation pack, including an illustrated envelope, cover from Directorate General of Posts, Republic of China. Limited Edition. Ever since Tsangjier made characters and Meng-Tien invented brush pens, human events had been gradually recorded. However, people used cloth and leather, etc, to write on at that time. It was until the eunuch Tsai-lun of the Eastern Han dynasty probed into paper-making art that paper was introduced to the use of recording, and gradually expanded its usage to drawing, printing and packing, etc. Paper-making art is one of China's four great inventions, which contributed to the progress of human civilizations. Tian Gong Kai Wu, by Sung Yin-shing of the Ming dynasty, was divided into 3 volumes with 18 sections in total. Each section was accompanied with illustrations that faithfully recorded technical knowledge and living wisdom, which have been passed down for thousands of years. According to the article of "Killing Greens (cutting bamboo for paper syrup)" in that book, this Directorate specially issued a set of the following 5 stamps featuring 5 different paper-making process:- 1. The cutting of bamboo : illustrates cutting green bamboo and soaking it in water as fiber materials for paper-making. 2. The cooking of bamboo : depicts the bamboo being cooked in a wooden pail. 3. The pouring of syrup into a wooden panel : shows a wet paper being taken down from the panel. 4. The stacking of the panel : features the wet paper, with plate putting on it. 5. The drying of paper : depicts the wet paper being seen pasted on the wall of earth and then heated.
