London / Surrey Art Drawn Postcard. Artist Signed by Charles F. Flower. The Great Hall Interior. The Charterhouse, London. / The Charterhouse (French Chartreuse) was formerly a Carthusian monastery founded by Sir Walter Manny in 1371. It was dissolved by Henry VIII., and after various vicissitudes was bought in 1611 by Thomas Sutton to place there his hospital for 80 poor men and 40 poor boys. The School was moved to Godalming in 1872. The Great Hall dates from 1500, but was considerably altered by the Duke of Norfolk, who owned the property 1565-72.
